PLANS to transform a golf club into a multi-million pound tourism and leisure complex are being unveiled to the public tomorrow (Saturday).

As Washington Developments secures complete control of Woodham Golf and Country Club, near Newton Aycliffe, in County Durham, bosses will share their vision for its future.

The plans include a 120-bedroom four star hotel with a health club, spa and corporate facilities, improved golf course and clubhouse and new homes.

Director Jamie Murphy believes the facility, renamed Woodham Golf Resort, will bring up to 20,000 visitors to the region each year, boost the local economy by £16.5m a year and create more than 300 new jobs.

He said: "What is here now works so it will be business as usual for our loyal staff and members but we're hugely excited about the future.

"We think that in five years time this can be a destination golf course, provide accommodation and facilities for people at nearby Aycliffe Industrial Estate and put Woodham and Newton Aycliffe on the map."

The Irish company bought the 220-acre site in 2005 and has gradually taken over management from owner Stan Roberts, who has ran it since 1982.

Michael Parker, chairman of the design team, said the public's ideas will be considered when shaping a final scheme to submit to planners at Sedgefield Borough Council.

He said: "We genuinely want to hear people's opinions.

"We've already changed things by working with a liaison group, which includes staff and members, by moving the hotel to reduce the impact on residents and changes to the traffic and parking schemes.

"If we invest a lot of money and want our neighbours to be our customers, we want them to be happy."

A consultation event will be held at the club, off Burnhill Way, Newton Aycliffe, on Saturday July 14 from 10am to 5pm.
