A VILLAGE is being transformed into a wildlife haven, in a community effort.

A wide range of organisations have worked together to boost the conservation value of Greatham, on the outskirts of Hartlepool.

The improvements have been led by the organisers of Greatham in Bloom, Greatham sports field committee, Greatham Parish Council, Hartlepool Borough Council's countryside warden service and Owton Fens Community Association.

More than 50 bird boxes, made by Greatham Primary School, Greatham Youth Club, St Paul's Scout Group and Hartlepool council's Warren Road Social Skills Centre, have been put up in mature trees around the village, with help from boys on work experience from Dyke House School and members of the countryside wardens' team of volunteers.

At the village sports field, 150 small trees have been planted, with help from youth club members. Another 1,700 trees will be planted next winter, thanks to donations from Alab Environmental Services, Huntsman Tioxide and Hartlepool Power Station.

Volunteers from Owton Fens Community Association have helped maintain grassed areas and water flower beds.

There have also been several community litter blitzes, and primary school pupils have produced posters with strong messages about littering and dog-fouling.

Greatham in Bloom organiser Dorothy Clark said: "It is great that so many different groups of people, including many youngsters, have come together for the good of the village. I would like to congratulate everyone on their efforts."

Northumbria in Bloom judges will be shown the improvements when they visit Greatham on Monday.
