YOUNGSTERS who learnt to play the clarinet in only ten months staged a concert for parents yesterday.
Twenty-seven year four pupils, aged eight and nine, at Finchale Primary School, Durham, showed off their skills with the instrument - a C rather B flat clarinet - they first took up in September.
The youngsters were taking part in a programme under the Government's Wider Opportunities Initiative, designed to encourage children to learn to play a musical instrument.
Headteacher Sandra Whitton said: "One of the reasons behind this initiative was to encourage music in schools and get children more enthusiastic about it.
"The county council's music service should be proud of what the children have achieved. There is a renewed enthusiasm for music now.''
