A GROUP is being launched to give villagers a bigger voice.

East Durham Homes is helping to establish a residents' association for Wingate and Station Town.

The first meeting of the group will be on Thursday, July 19, at Wingate and District Community Centre, in Front Street, in the village, at 6.30pm.

The meeting is seen as providing a platform for people living in Wingate and Station Town to enable them to secure answers from service providers and to speak up for their communities.

A spokeswoman for East Durham Homes said: "The association will empower tenants to act together to overcome the challenges faced by the community and to provide a focal point for other agencies, such as the police, to contact the community.''

The guest speaker on the evening will be Jack James, acting director of property investment for East Durham Homes, who will provide information on the capital repairs programme for 2007-8.

Everyone will be welcome at the meeting.
