MORE than 170 children from schools across Redcar will get together tomorrow to launch a CD of songs they have written and recorded together.

Friends and family have been invited to attend the launch at Redcar Community College to listen to the children perform tracks from Better Together - Live.

The children will be performing their songs covering a wide range of subjects from angels to otters and leadership to the seaside.

The children, aged from seven to 12, from Dormanstown, Riverdale, Zetland and Coatham primary schools, and Redcar Community College, worked together as part of a project run by The Sage Gateshead and the Primary Learning Network.

Working alongside their classmates and young musicians Donna Harding and Liz Corney from The Sage, the youngsters composed the songs about topics from the national curriculum.

Miss Harding said: "The project has been really exciting and the children completely exceeded our expectations with their standard of work. The album is brilliant and reflects all of the hard work that the children put into writing their songs. I can't wait to hear the songs performed live."

The project is designed to improve the children's literacy and musical skills by enabling them to explore their creativity in an inspiring and contemporary way.

As part of the programme, the children recorded their songs at Redcar college where they got to work with some of the college staff and also performed alongside some of the older young people at a gig in the school.

The CD will be available from the schools involved for £4 and features seven songs.
