Junior Darlington Harriers impressed again in the fourth round of the National Young Athletes League at Shildon. Warming up for the English Schools Track and Field Championships in Birmingham this weekend, Faye Bowles was again unbeatable in both sprints and also took second place in the shot.

Fellow U-17 competitor Charlotte McGarry achieved third places in the 800m and discus and Rebecca Noble took second in the 80m hurdles and scored wins in the B 800m and discus. Emma Shakeshaft was first equal in the high jump, third in the long jump and won the B shot.

For the U-15 girls, Loran Goldsmith scored three second places in the shot, 100m and long jump. Heather Woodward was fourth in the 200m and second in the B discus and shot. Beth Ward was second in the 800m and B long jump and took third in the B 200m.

Rosie Clark was second in the 1500m and discus and was fourth in the javelin. For the U-13 girls, Becky Ward was third in the long jump, fourth in the 75m and second in the B high jump. Bethan Bowles was fourth in the 150m and shot and third in the B 800m.

Iona Richings was second in the high jump and fourth in the B 800m and shot. Amy Shakeshaft was third in the B 75m, B 150m and B long jump.

Paul Jefferson won the U-17 men's 100m and Chris Gaffney took victory in the 800m. Robert Fox was third in the 200m. Tom West was third in the 1500m and Andrew Clifford was fourth in the 400m hurdles and won the B 100m hurdles. Andrew Jordan was third in the 100m hurdles and second in the B 400m hurdles.

For the U-15 boys, Michael Noble was third in the 800m and Paul Clifford fourth in the discus. Nathan Raine was second in the shot, third in the 1500m and fourth in the javelin. Sean Read won the B shot and was third in the discus. Josh Phillips won the B javelin.

Darlington Harriers finished the match in fourth place, with Wakefield taking top honours.

Kate Blaylock was in action in the English Schools North-East multi-events final at Wakefield. She finished eighth in the heptathlon for the triumphant Durham intermediate girls' team.

Verity Pratt and Rosie Clark are also celebrating fine achievements. Verity won the U-19 award and Rosie the U-16 accolade in the Richmond and Hambleton sports awards.

Lewis Moses continues to impress at some of the country's most prestigious meetings. Lewis ran 3 mins 54.36 secs in the final of the British Milers Club U-23 1500m at Bedford and was also due to run in the BMC grand prix meeting in Watford the following weekend.

Nearer home, Thomas West competed in the BMC meeting at Claireville Stadium, Middlesbrough, where he won the Academy 800m race in a new personal best of 2 mins 2.9 secs. Neil Robinson ran a season's best of 2 mins 4.6 secs for third place and Chris Gaffney ran 2 mins 7.6 secs for seventh.

The club's annual road race, the Pitstop 10k, attracted keen competition at Croft Circuit. First home for the club was Colin Taylor in fifth place in a time of 37 mins 5 secs. Steve Hutchinson was 11th in 38:37 and Paul Smith was 21st in 40:59. A place behind was Kevin Grainger in 41:04.

Brian Hannah was 33rd in 43:29 and Geoff Ward was 46th in 46:10. Shirley Gibson was F50 veterans' winner in 48:36, with 62nd place overall. Steve Dauber was 74th in 53:03. The race was won by Jim Bulman in 33:34, more than a minute ahead of runner-up Gary Hetherington.

Men's wheelchair winner was Jason Richards and Tanni Grey Thompson won the women's race.

The Black Sheep race series is always a popular draw for Harriers and the Rainton 10k fell on George Prince's 70th birthday. He celebrated by finishing in fine style with 54 mins 6 secs for 180th place.

Graham Bell was 34th in 41:02, Dave Weston 111st in 46:58, Jackie Nicholls 151st in 50:55, Joanne Tonkin 178th in 53:46 and Annette Hubery 230th in 63:06.

Next in the series was the daunting Burn Valley half marathon, run over a gruelling course from Masham. The race is usually staged in blistering temperatures but for once the weather was kind on a day five Harriers ventured to the attractive market town.

Paul Kelly was ninth in 1 hr 27 mins 7 secs, followed by Graham Bell in 32nd place with 1:34:52. Linda Noble continued her recent good form by dipping under 1:40 with 1:39:24 for 52nd place. Emma Morley was 129th with 1:51:29 and Shirley Gibson 160th in 1:57:18.

Ben Wilson fitted in one of his favourite races during his annual visit to the All-England tennis championships at Wimbledon. Ben was 40th in the British 10k in central London where Olympic marathon champion Stefano Baldini headed a class field in 29 mins 27 secs. Ben was pleased with his clocking of 36:31.

In the Summer Coast Road 5k at New Marske, Steve Hutchinson was 23rd in 18 mins 35 secs and Kevin Grainger was 39th in 19:47.
