I've looked for a bargain from the bottom of the range this week so Aldi was the automatic choice.

Both these Bushland wines are £3.99 and come from the Hunter Valley, New South Wales.

The chardonnay has a straw yellow colour with a bouquet of tropical fruit.

On the palate it displays a delicate texture of ripe peach and melon. After cold settling, 70 per cent of the juice was fermented in stainless steel and the rest in cask.

Then it was left on the lees for eight months and this process has resulted in a really flavoursome wine.

The acid content is just right and with 13 per cent alcohol. The wine is ideal as an aperitif or with salad dishes and light Asian food.

The shiraz has a deep plum colour, spicy peppery aromas and rich mocha and plum flavours. It's 13 per cent alcohol and is fine for drinking for the next five years. This is a food wine - preferably stews or casseroles although it's worth trying with some hard cheeses.
