PUPILS from primary schools in Hartlepool will display their creative writing talents.

A selection of work produced by youngsters from Rossmere, Grange, Throston, and Sacred Heart schools will be displayed at the town's Central Library, in York Road, from Friday until Saturday, July 28.

Earlier this year, the children worked with writers from New Writing North, the region's writing development agency after it was approached by Hartlepool Borough Council's children's services department to devise a project to develop the creativity of pupils and teachers.

Four professional writers - Celia Bryce, Andy Croft, Fiona Evans and Carina Rodney - spent seven days in the schools.

In addition, a creative day for school literacy co-ordinators was held.

Julie Sutton, lead primary strategy co-ordinator with the council's children's services, said: "Pupils from years four and five took part in the project, producing a variety of creative work ranging from play scripts to poetry.

"They thoroughly enjoyed themselves and, hopefully, they will have developed new skills that will stand them in good stead for the future."

A collection of work from the four schools is to be published in a book called From Our Shores and all the children who took part in the project will receive a copy.

Several copies will also be available in libraries across the Tees Valley.
