PUPILS from Bishop Auckland demonstrated their fire-breaking skills and received a fire service award for their hard work.

Nine students from Bishop Barrington School, King James Community Arts College and St John's RC Comprehensive School completed a 12-week fire-breaking course with Durham and Darlington Fire Service.

Susan Johnson, chief executive of the service, said: "The fire- breaking course is an excellent opportunity for young people to experience what life is like as a firefighter.

"They learn about teamwork, resourcefulness and what it's like to have a job working with fire."

The pupils worked with firefighters who showed them how to set up a hose, put out a fire and work quickly under pressure.

All pupils obtained an NVQ level one in Life Skills for completing the course.

Steve Laverick, youth inclusion officer for Durham and Darlington Fire Service said: "Passing this course gives them a great life skill and teaches them the dangers of fire.
