A DETAILED plan for a multi-million pound regeneration of an area of Teesside could soon be put before planners.

National development company JG Land and Estates (JGLE) bought the former Ministry of Defence (MoD) spares depot in Eaglescliffe, last year.

In the years since the MoD closed its Durham Lane base, to make savings, the site has changed hands and names becoming known as Cenargo and Eaglescliffe Logistics.

New buyers JGLE Homes have re-named the site Allens West, taking the name from the adjacent rail halt, and plan to build 500 homes, including starter homes and a care home for the elderly, shops, a doctor's surgery, community and sports facilities.

The company says its research suggests a shortfall of affordable homes in the Stockton area.

The developers hope the name change will create "a real pride of place" and provide existing and potential tenants with an easily identifiable business address that has a strong local affinity.

A spokesman said last night: "On the employment side, it needs a lot of work to bring it up to standard. The best way to provide investment for employment is to release the remainder of the land; utilise the rest of the site."

He said the plan was to safeguard jobs the site had provided, and offer opportunities to businesses in the area.

There has been some consultation with residents and Egglescliffe Parish Council and the firm has distributed a traffic questionnaire to residents. JGLE says the feedback will help it produce a planning application for the Allens West site, which could be submitted to Stockton Borough Council at the beginning of the autumn.

John Walker, vice-chairman of the parish council, said last night: "We have a meeting with JG Land and Estates. There has been a leaflet drop and a public relations exercise, but people are concerned about the size of the development and the impact on traffic and the road network."
