AN exhibition of pictures by members of the Durham Photographic Society will open in Durham Cathedral on Friday.

The photographs will be on display in the cathedral's Galilee Chapel until Friday, July 27.

The exhibition, which is free, will open at 7pm, on Friday, by Tracey Ingle, head of cultural services for Durham City Council. Ms Ingle will also judge the best photograph competition and award the winner the Ted Mansell Trophy.

Members of the society will also have photographs exhibited in the refreshments tent on Durham Racecourse, during the Miners' Gala on Saturday.

The images to be included are all taken from previous Miners' Galas.

Robin Wallace, the society's publicity secretary, said the group, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary, is going from strength to strength with the expansion of digital photography.

He said: "There has been a revolution in photography and we now have people doing exhibitions who have never done a print before.

"People say it's easier, and it is, but you still have to have an eye for a good picture."

The society, which has more than 70 members, meets in St Oswald's Church Institute, Church Street, Durham, on Thursdays from 7.30pm.
