A SWIMMING pool will close for four months from today for improvements to be carried out.

City of York Council officials have said the work to the city's Yearsley Swimming Pool had been planned for the summer months to minimise disruption to swimming lessons, courses and clubs.

The roof and wall cladding will be replaced with a new, energy efficient structure to improve insulation.

The ventilation system will also be overhauled.

Health and safety improvements to the pool hall will include cleaning and re-grouting the swimming pool tank and tiled area around the edge of the pool.

New floor tiles and drainage channels will be laid around the pool and on the walkway in front of cubicles and shower areas.

The new floor tiling will reduce any slip or trip hazards underfoot.

Fire doors will be updated to meet regulations.

The lighting will also be improved, with each changing cubicle having its own sensor-activated light.

External work on the building will include improved access.

Because of the Yearsley pool project, York will be left with only one municipal swimming pool through the summer, the Edmund Wilson pool in Dringhouses.
