POLICE have launched a poster campaign amid fears that the new anti-smoking legislation could spark an increase in thefts.
It is feared opportunist thieves could prey on people who leave their belongings unattended while they go outside to smoke.
The campaign has been launched by the Safer Hartlepool Partnership and Hartlepool Police, with the backing of Hartlepool Borough Council.
All licensed premises in the town are being targeted, with police distributing the posters.
Detective Chief Inspector Gordon Lang said: "I would urge people to keep their property with them at all times.
"The theft of a handbag, for example, can lead to all sorts of inconveniences because it could mean replacing the likes of keys and credit cards.
"Wherever you go, your property should go, too."
Joe Hogan, of the Safer Hartlepool Partnership, said: "We hope that people use common sense when obeying this legislation and keep an eye on their belongings.
"These posters are a reminder not just to smokers but also the wider public that they need to have increased awareness when it comes to looking after their property."
