THE skies over Darlington will fill with balloons on Wednesday as a much-loved woman is remembered.

A year ago this week, 47-year-old Tracy Wetherill died following a brave battle with brain cancer.

The friends, family and colleagues of the popular council worker will gather in her honour at Darlington’s Market Square from noon on Wednesday.

Balloons will be sold for £2 at the card stall in the town’s indoor market and the 1st Stop Party Shop, with proceeds going towards Melanoma UK and The Brain Tumour Charity.

Ms Wetherill’s sister, Vickie Bester, said it would be a fitting tribute to an inspiring woman who never complained.

She said: “She fought so hard but I never heard her moan, she always acted like nothing was wrong with her.

“We’d like people to remember her as being fun-loving and full of mischief, with a big smile.”

Ms Wetherill worked in the housing department at Darlington Borough Council.

Ada Burns, chief executive of the council, said: “Tracy was a long serving and valued member of staff who was determined to live life to the full and enjoy every minute.

“She touched a lot of people’s lives and I am sure many of her colleagues will attend the balloon launch to remember their friend and raise money for causes close to her family’s heart.”
