A MAN wanted by police jumped into a canal and had to be rescued by officers because he couldn't swim.

North Yorkshire Police Road Policing Group pursued a van believed to have been involved in a burglary after it failed to stop on Tuesday night.

The incident, in the Selby area, led to police blowing out the van's tyres.

"Van involved in burglary fails to stop for #Selby officers. Stinger deployed by us, vehicle abandoned & driver makes off on foot," an officer wrote on Twitter.

"He then jumps into a canal in an attempt to escape but can't swim & has to be rescued by officers!"

Bizarrely, police then came across the same man following a separate incident in the early hours of Wednesday..

"Stopped south of #Selby. Driver is disqualified, there's a person in the boot & passenger is male who jumped in the canal yesterday!" wrote a spokesman on Twitter.
