YORKSHIRE Bank’s decision to close its Guisborough branch is “disgraceful”, according to an MP.
Tom Blenkinsop, Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland Labour MP, said customers in the market town needed banking facilities on their doorstep.
Yorkshire Bank announced earlier this week it was closing three branches on Teesside, in Guisborough, Berwick Hills in Middlesbrough and Norton, near Stockton, part of a 79-branch closure programme.
Mr Blenkinsop said: “Not only will local bank staff see their jobs at risk, but local people in Guisborough will lose yet another banking facility. Yorkshire Bank say that all accounts will be transferred to their Redcar Branch, but for some trade customers, such a move will probably be useless as they need constant banking facilities on the doorstep.
The company said the reason for the closures was down to the fact that the number of customers using bank branches for day-to-day transactions across the industry had fallen by a third since 2011. There had also been a “sharp and sustained increase in digital and mobile engagement”.
