A MAJOR highway scheme to improve the flow of traffic in a Teesside town will be completed soon.

The new road layout in Ingleby Barwick, which has seen Myton Way turned into dual carriageway from the Tesco roundabout to Broom Hill and the Sandgate roundabout replaced with a traffic light-controlled junction, is now fully operational.

The scheme is part of a wider project to reduce peak period congestion in the centre of the town, which has already seen Quarry Farm roundabout upgraded.

Stockton Borough Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and transport, Councillor Nigel Cooke, said: “I would like to thank the residents of Ingleby Barwick for their patience whilst these improvements have been carried out.

“We know that Myton Way is very well used by commuters and this scheme is vital to ensure that our road network is improved and enhanced to keep pace with the growth of the Borough.

“It will ease congestion in the centre of Ingleby Barwick for the long-term, making traffic flow much more freely to meet the needs of residents, visitors and businesses.”

The contractor will be returning after Christmas to complete some footpaths and landscaping work but there will be minimal traffic management required for this.

The Ingleby Barwick highway improvement works have been funded by the Local Growth Fund, the Department for Transport, private sector match funding and Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council.
