INSPIRED by a classic Christmas song, a vintage-loving woman has decked out her home – as if it was 1942.

Every year Angela Gill chooses a different year as the theme to decorate her home in Coxhoe, in County Durham.

This year she was inspired by the song White Christmas and has decorated her home as if it was 1942 – the year it came out.

The finished product is the result of months of research to make sure all the details are right, scouring the internet and trawling car boot sales.

She said: “I started really early trying to get everything so in the summer I was on eBay looking for decorations.

“I’ve made the old-fashioned paper streamers myself and some of the baubles. I’ve made sure all the decorations are what people would have had in 1942.

“I’ve been looking at old Christmas photos to see what the trees looked like and I’ve been watching the film.

“I’ve got everything off eBay or from car boot sales. I started buying things in June.”

The 42-year-old, who lives with her mum, three dogs, cat and parrot, started the trend in about the year 2000 and has since chosen years from different eras.

She added: “I’ve always liked doing it and mam absolutely loves it. I do it for her as well because it helps her remember.

“My house is all done up in vintage anyway. I just love the 1920s and 30s and 40s – the history is so interesting.

“Last year I did 1928 which was the year my dad was born and the year Mickey Mouse came out. I absolutely loved that one.”

The song White Christmas was first written in May 1942. That year the Bing Crosby classic spent 11 weeks on top of the Billboard charts and won an academy award for best original composition after featuring in the film Holiday Inn.

The song also featured in the 1954 musical White Christmas, which was the highest grossing film of that year.

The version most often heard today is a 1947 re-recording.

White Christmas is the most-recorded Christmas song of all time – there have been more than 500 recorded versions of the song.
