A GIRLS' football team is celebrating after coming third in a national tournament.

The six-a-side team from Hurworth Primary School, near Darlington, competed in the English Schools' Football Association National Finals at Keele University.

The Year Six girls, who lost to the eventual champions, also picked up the tournament's Fair Play trophy.

The team were representing the North-East of England.

Teacher Dominique Petch praised the girls' spirit and performance and said each member of the team acquitted themselves excellently.

She also singled out striker Lucy Charlton, who scored all of the goals apart from one, defender Anna Miller who played brilliantly and goalkeeper Lydia Snowball, who made a string of excellent saves, for special mention.

Mrs Petch added: The girls absolutely loved it.

Were extremely proud of all of them.

On and off the pitch, they were brilliant, there was a really nice team spirit.

The girls are all off to the comprehensive in September, where Im sure theyll do well.
