YOUNG volunteers are to share their favourite reads at North Yorkshire libraries - with the help of book displays, emojis, Twitter and selfies.

Volunteers with Reading Hack - a programme led by 13 to 24-year-olds which centres around reading activities – are organising activities and sharing their favourite books at the county’s libraries.

It is part of North Yorkshire County Council’s involvement in a national celebration of young people’s reading and writing which begins on October 24 and which will culminate in the BBC’s #LoveToRead weekend on Saturday, November 5 and Sunday, November 6.

To share the books they love, Reading Hack volunteers will put on book displays across libraries and produce Twitter book review “selfies” and “Hacks in Six” which involves using six words, emojis or photographs to describe the plot of a book.

The initiative has been developed by the Reading Agency and led by young people that involves reading activities and volunteering to gain skills and experience.

Over the summer holidays, 160 Reading Hack volunteers helped library staff in North Yorkshire deliver the Summer Reading Challenge.

More than 50 are continuing to volunteer with libraries and some will help deliver activities over the festival fortnight, which are taking place on;

• Monday, October 24, Pickering library, 10.30am to 11.30am: OFOs, Origami Flying Objects

• Wednesday, October 26, Northallerton library, 10.30am to 11.30am: Clarice Bean storytime and craft activity

• Wednesday, October 26, Kirkbymoorside library, 2pm to 3pm: spooky craft activity

• Thursday, October 27, Helmsley library, 2pm to 3pm: children’s spooky special story time and craft activity

• Saturday, November 5, Scarborough library: scary craft activity

North Yorkshire County Councillor Chris Metcalfe, executive member for library and information services, said: “The Reading Hack programme is an excellent way for young people to gain skills and experience and to share their love of reading, in particular with their peers who dislike or struggle with reading.

“The reading festival and #LoveToRead weekend represents just one of many opportunities for young people to get involved with their local library.”
