WORK will start next week to improve safety and traffic flow at a busy junction in Stockton.
The £300,000 scheme will result in the widening of the A177 Durham Road, near the Mile House Hotel, adding an extra lane for northbound traffic turning right into Darlington Lane.
The poor road surface will be replaced and a new traffic control system will be installed.
Work will start next Monday and is expected to take up to 12 weeks. Diversions will be in place and temporary traffic lights will control the junction.
Northbound traffic will be diverted from the A177 Durham Road on to the A1027 ringroad roundabout towards Norton, then back along Junction Road.
Access to Durham Road properties between the roundabout and Darlington Lane will be maintained.
Councillor Bob Cook said: "This is a very busy junction, which suffers from increasing traffic congestion.
"This is particularly so at peak times, with right-turners delaying other traffic.
"It is a complex scheme, and to complete the work safely, we will need to close part of Durham Road while it proceeds.
"We will be doing everything possible to keep disruption to a minimum and our contractors will do all they can to complete the work as quickly as possible."
