A MAN thought he'd stumbled into an episode of I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here when he munched some sugarsnap peas - and found them crawling with caterpillars.

The father-of-three was enjoying a healthy snack at home in front of the television when his supper started moving.

"I should have been on TV doing the witchetty grub challenge - at least I would have been paid for that," said Aaron Frost, of Hurworth, near Darlington.

Mr Frost, 24, and his wife, Lindsey, picked up the bag of sugar-snap peas with their weekly shopping from the Morrisons supermarket, at Morton Park.

Later that night they settled down in front of the TV and started nibbling on the snack.

"We went up to bed and put the lights off while we were watching TV," said Mr Frost, a motorway maintenance worker.

"I started eating but then felt something drop onto the bed.

"I switched the light on and realised the whole pack was riddled with caterpillars.

"My wife is eight months pregnant and she just couldn't handle it - she had to run to the bathroom to be sick.

"I'm not that squeamish. I was in the army for a few years and we ate all kinds of things to survive, but I thought I'd left all that behind."

Mr Frost said the peas, which were grown in Kenya, were infested with the caterpillars.

"We thought we were being healthy by snacking on vegetables - we didn't expect to end up eating luminous green Kenyan caterpillars," he said.

"Some of them were tiny little brown things, but a good few were big and fat - about the size of a pea. They'd eaten their way into the pods and were hiding in there. I hate to think how many we ate before we realised."

A spokeswoman for Morrisons said yesterday: "The quality of all the products we sell is of paramount importance to us.

"We urge Mr Frost to return the product and its packaging to store in order for us to undertake a thorough investigation and resolve this matter."
