YOUNGSTERS in Middlesbrough will soon be able to enjoy traditional outdoor fun and games thanks to the Big Lottery Fund.

Middlesbrough Environment City will receive £62,016 to help its Great Outdoors play project.

The scheme aims to increase the appeal and enjoyment of playing outdoors by introducing traditional games such as hopscotch, tig and games from countries such as Bangladesh, Brazil and Libya.

The chairman of Middlesbrough Environment City, Middlesbrough councillor Ron Lowes, said: "We are delighted to receive the grant, particularly as the project will make a valuable contribution to the town's recently launched play strategy.

"Outdoor play brings so many benefits to both children and their carers, providing opportunities for healthy exercise, developing life skills and encouraging imagination."

Children between three and 14 will be able to get involved in events through play sessions at local play and community centres. James Turner, of the Big Lottery Fund, said: "Children from all walks of life will benefit from this project that will bring a fresh approach to play in Middlesbrough.

"Funding is available to provide challenging and stimulating activities, increase wellbeing and positively contribute to the physical, emotional and social development of children."
