HIGHWAYS chiefs have increased the speed limit on a road running alongside four schools despite strong objections from councillors.

The move follows a 12-month 40mph trial in Burnhill Way, Newton Aycliffe, between Greenfield Way and Williamfield Way.

The stretch of road is served by two subways, but Great Aycliffe town councillors are concerned that many children do not use them.

Sedgefield Borough Council has also announced plans to increase and develop the existing sports provision along the roadside.

Aycliffe councillor John Clare is the deputy headteacher of one of the nearby schools, Greenfield School Community and Arts College.

He said: "I understand the thinking and I understand the figures behind the increase. They are saying it looks and feels like a 40mph road. But the town council's stance and my personal stance is why not make it look and feel like a 30mph road.

"Along that stretch of road you have hundreds of children aged between five and 15 crossing every day.

"We are urging drivers and we are asking parents to urge their children to be extremely careful when they cross.

"I am desperate that we should not be proved right with the life of some poor child."

A report to Durham County Council highway chiefs said the road fits the safety criteria for a 40mph limit and that increasing the limit would make it easier to police.
