STUDENTS at Bishop Auckland College have proved they can cook up a treat after taking part in a culinary competition.

Eight level two and three catering students competed against each other in the college's new catering department.

Each member of the group was given the same ingredients and were required to plan their own menu and cook a two-course meal for the judges, curriculum programme leaders Sharron Tunstall and Gale Armstrong.

Winner of the competition was Michael Douthwaite, 16, from Hunwick. His winning menu was sautéed chicken pieces in rosemary, cream and garlic sauce served with mashed potato, baton carrots and broccoli florets. For dessert, he served up an apple and fruits of the forest parcel with Chantilly cream.

Richard Hinch, catering manager, said: "The standard of all dishes submitted for the final was excellent and credit goes to all who participated.

"The level of competence and individuality has made the lecturers and myself very proud, and has raised the bar on excellence for next year's trainees to aspire to."
