POLICE are appealing for information after a father-of-one was killed in a road traffic accident.
Police have named the man as 28-year-old Nicholas Michael Bennett, of Darlington.
The accident happened at 2.25am yesterday morning, on the A167, near Coatham Mundeville, about half a mile from junction 58 on the A1(M).
Mr Bennett, a musician, was driving a green Ford Escort north-west on a straight, downhill section of the road, when the car left the road and crashed into a mature tree growing on the grass verge.
He was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital but had sustained fatal injuries.
It is not known why the car left the road. At the time of the accident, it was raining, visibility was good and the road surface was wet and greasy with surface water.
The road was closed until 7am yesterday morning.
Anyone witnesses are asked to contact Durham Police's accident unit on 0845-60-60-365.
