THE weekend's big horse racing meeting at York has been cancelled because the course is waterlogged.

William Derby, chief executive and clerk of the course said that today is on course to be the wettest June day since course records began and it was the first time in ten years that a meeting had to be abandoned because of rain.

"It is ironic that this very month we have submitted plans to City of York Council to undertake a significant drainage project which we hope to complete ahead of the 2009 season," said Mr Derby. "Should it be approved, it will give us a better chance to avoid these disappointments in the future."

Racegoers may return their unused tickets and badges to June Refunds, York Racecourse, Knavesmire Road, York YO23 1EX within 28 days for a refund.
