A TOWN gala will have swing boats after donors stepped in to cover safety testing costs.
Organisers of Hawes Gala, in Upper Wensleydale, feared that this year's 40th gala would have to go ahead without the traditional ride, as new insurance rules meant it would have to be tested by the Showman's Guild at a cost of £200.
But local businesses, residents and other organisations collected enough cash, including a £200 grant from North Yorkshire County Council's Richmondshire area committee, to pay for the ride to be tested.
If the ride, built for the first gala in 1968, cannot be tested in time, fairground operators Taylor's have offered to loan the gala organisers swing boats for the event, which takes place on Saturday, June 23.
