A SWIMMING pool is to receive an investment after a seven-year campaign to save it.
The Yearsley pool, in York, is to receive £500,000 for a revamp, but will be closed for four months and not eight weeks, as initially anticipated, because all the work will be done at the same time, rather than in stages.
City of York Council has allocated £500,000 to the scheme, with an extra £300,000 drawn from the swimming pool programme's built-in contingency.
Fiona Evans, of the Yearsley Pool Action Group, said: "The Yearsley Swimming Pool is a wonderful asset to this city. Rather then being disparaged for its age, it should be cherished as part of the rich historical heritage that we are the privileged custodians of.
"By approving these proposals, the council is underlining the important old principle that people and communities matter."
The plans include repairs to the roof and walls, improved ventilation, new filtration devices, new tiles and regrouting at the bottom of the pool.
