PLANS have been unveiled for the second annual Veterans' Day parade in Chester-le-Street, to be held at the town's newly-unveiled Civic Heart,

The event, to be held on Sunday, July 1, will feature a performance of military music and a presentation of badges toArmed Forces veterans, followed by a buffet lunch.

The veterans' badges will be presented by North Durham MP Kevan Jones.

The parade follows a successful celebration held at Chester-le-Street Civic Centre last year, to mark the first annual Veterans' Day, a nationwide celebration to mark the important role played by Armed Forces veterans and bodies such as the Durham Light Infantry Associations.

Mr Jones said: "Following last year's event, I'm delighted to once again be taking part in the Veterans' Day celebration, which I hope will become an annual tradition in Chester-le-Street, and across the UK."

Chester-le-Street District Council chairman Councillor Allen Humes said: "I am proud to be involved with this particular celebration and particularly pleased that it will take place in the newly developed Civic Heart area of Chester-le-Street."

Anyone who served with the Armed Forces on or before December 31, 1984, is entitled to a Veteran's Badge.

Veterans who are eligible, and wish to receive a badge at the ceremony, are urged to contact Mr Jones' office, on 0191-371-8834, or the district council, on 0191-387-1919 for an application form. Forms are also available from reception at Chester-le-Street civic centre.

Completed forms must be returned to the Civic Centre by Monday.

Veterans who have already received a badge, but did not take part in last year's presentation, may also have their badge officially presented by Mr Jones during the celebration. Telephone 0191-371 8834 for details.
