A POLICE van was involved in a road accident near Barnard Castle today.

An officer based in Staindrop was responding to reports of a break in at the old Richardson Hospital in Barnard Castle when he hit a car travelling in the opposite direction just before 2pm.

The Peugeot patrol van hit the blue Mitsubishi Space Star on the A688 road near Barford Corner, causing damage to both vehicles.

The road was wet at the time after several hours of rain.

Neither the police officer, or the female driver of the car, who was from Barnard Castle, were injured.

A passenger in the rear of the Mitsubishi was treated for whiplash.

Part of the A688 from Stainton village to Staindrop was closed for two hours whilst accident investigation officers examined the site of the accident.

Police said it is too early to comment on the cause of the accident.

Officers who attended the reported break in at the former Richardson Hospital found evidence of an attempted forced entry.
