A CHARITY that helps people with Alzheimer's disease has been given a boost thanks to a council chairman.

Councillor Carl Richardson, of Hartlepool Borough Council, presented Hartlepool and East Durham Alzheimer's Trust with a cheque for £1,231, as one of his nominated charities for 2006-7.

The trust runs a number of day centres for people with Alzheimer's, including one in Heather Grove, Hartlepool, where the cheque presentation was made to centre manager Joanne Blackwood.

Coun Richardson said: "The trust provides vital help for people with this cruel disease and much-needed support to their families and carers.

"I am delighted to be able to make this contribution, which has been made possible thanks to the generous support of local people at my fundraising events over the past year."

Ms Blackwood said: "I would like to thank Coun Richardson for nominating our charity this year and all the other people who have given their kind support. The money will help us to organise lots of interesting and stimulating activities for the people who use our centres."
