STUDENTS from Bishop Auckland hit the airwaves with more than a song this week.

King James I Community College students took part in a project with Creative Partnerships Durham Sunderland, bringing history and English lessons to life with raps, songs and sketches for college radio.

During the past five months, performance poet Kate Fox has been working with the college to produce material for the station.

Students have been creating poetry raps about the Battle of Hastings in history lessons, and learning how to interview people and perform comedy sketches in english and media classes. The final result was a 30-minute radio broadcast.

Drummer Jonathan Wright, 13, said: "This project is a really good idea and it's a different way to learn about our subjects rather than just study from a book."
