DANGEROUS and defective electric blankets are still being discovered in homes across the North-East – despite testing sessions being offered to owners.
Around one third of all electric blankets are identified as unsafe when inspected by Trading Standards teams and fire officers working in Darlington.
In preparation for the cooler weather, County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service and Age UK Darlington have invited residents to have their electric blankets tested for defects.
The scheme, which has been running in the town for 12 years, also offers replacements to those who own blankets that fail safety tests.
Councillor Chris McEwan, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for economy and regeneration, said: “This is a valuable service that saves lives and the testing is free of charge for Darlington residents.
“So ensure your own safety and help elderly loved ones and neighbours by booking an appointment to have those electric blankets checked.”
Hand-knitted hats and gloves to those in need during the sessions on Tuesday, September 6, and Wednesday, September 7, in Darlington Age UK, Bradbury House, off Beaumont Street West.
The safety checks, part-organised by Darlington Borough Council’s Trading Standards Team, will be carried out by an engineer by appointment only. To book, call 01325-362832.
