BUDDING chefs had their first taste of competition in a cook-off which was judged by managers from the restaurant trade.

Darlington College hosted the North Yorkshire Hospitality Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVe) learner competition, with students going head-to-head in the kitchen and restaurant.

Students from Darlington, York and Yorkshire Coast colleges, and Scarborough training provider VT Training, took part.

Part-time Darlington College student and learning advisor Helen Wood, of Catterick, won the food service contest. She hopes to teach catering and is taking an NVQ L3 qualification in kitchen and larder.

York College took the overall £500 prize thanks to the efforts of chefs Tom Spenceley, of Tadcaster, and Ben Allnutt, of York, who were first in the food production element of the contest.

CoVE manager Lisa Voss said: "Standards of preparation, cooking and service were extremely high making it a tough decision for the judges."
