VOLUNTEERS at a day hospice in Barnard Castle have been commended for their hard work.

The group, which works at the Butterwick Day Hospice at the Richardson Hospital, was given a framed certificate by volunteer support organisation 2D for volunteers' week.

Five volunteers look after ten patients at the day hospice, which is open on Mondays.

Judith Hutchings, volunteer co-ordinator for Butterwick Hospice, said: "The volunteers do not seek recognition for doing what they do - that's just in their nature.

"I gave them all plants to say well done.

"But they have all asked for them to be put outside on the roof terrace for the patients.

"This award is to celebrate the volunteers and appreciate the commitment they show towards us."

The five volunteers are Morag Buttler, Scot Robertson, Glen Howard, George Brown and Peter Foster.

"I do it because I wanted to give something back to the community when I retired to Barnard Castle," said Mr Howard.
