SPORTING organisations in a former mining community have cause to celebrate after securing lottery grants.

Mainsforth Bowls Club and Mainsforth Cricket Club, both in Ferryhill, have received almost £20,000 from the Awards for All scheme.

The money comes thanks to two grants prepared by Ferryhill Town Council and means the clubs will be able to buy new equipment.

Karen Emerson, from Ferryhill Town Council, said: "The Cricket Club, which secured £9,941, will be able to install a permanent netting system and purchase a bowling machine for training purposes, and a new aerator to assist with the maintenance of the pitch.

"The £9,987 secured by the Bowls Club will ensure that new, much-needed bowls drops can be installed at the club's grounds, and that a notice board and new seating can also be purchased.

"The two community groups are both delighted with their grants which will make a huge difference to their existing facilities and hopefully help attract new membership.
