POLICE are appealing for information following an attempted knifepoint robbery in a shop.

The incident happened on Murray Road, Chester-le-Street, at 11.30am on Friday, May, 6 in the Avenues area of the town.

A man, described as in his 20s, of medium build and approximately 5ft 7ins tall, walked into the shop holding a white ‘scream’ mask over his face and demanded money from the shop owner.

He was wearing an army-style camouflage jacket over a grey hoodie, dark trousers and black Nike trainers.

The shop owner challenged the suspect and he fled from the shop.

DC Christopher Bentham, from Stanley CID, said: "We are keen to speak to anyone who recognises the man shown in the CCTV.

"Although he was wearing a mask, there will be people out there who know who this man is.

"The shop owner, on this occasion, felt he could challenge this man. Luckily no one was injured and no money was taken, however, we now need to the public’s help to stop this happening again."
