A TRUST fund is being set in memory of a university student who died on a night out when he was struck by a taxi.

Robert Stephenson, 21, from Pickering, died on March 26 after a collision, in the early hours of the morning, on Micklegate in York.

A former pupil at Lady Lumley's School in Pickering, he was in the third year of an agriculture degree at Newcastle University, with honours in agronomy.

His family said they had decided that they would like to set up a trust to assist young people less fortunate than themselves through local sports teams and schools.

"As a rugby player with Malton and Norton Rugby Club and a cricketer with Thornton-le-Dale Cricket Club, Rob was never destined for stardom in any of his chosen sports but was one of those people who always put 100 per cent effort into anything he did and was a great team man,” said a family statement.

"Donations of sports clothing and equipment will be collected to be passed on to those who most need it. Junior sports sides frequently go on tour and donations of money will be used to help finance those who find these trips financially difficult.”

Donations for the Robert Stephenson Trust can be forwarded to Malton and Norton RUFC, Old Malton Road, Malton, YO17 7EY. Cheques should be payable to Robert Stephenson.
