A NEW crematorium could be built on former school playing fields if plans are approved.

With the rising population in Stockton the council has been looking at sites for a crematorium and is considering the former Blakeston/North Shore Academy sports field site in Roseworth.

The only other facilities in the Teesside area are the Teesside Crematorium at Acklam and the Kirkleatham Crematorium at Yearby, Redcar, which opened last year.

A consultation event is being held on Wednesday, February 24, between 3.30pm and 7pm, at Roseworth Community Social Club on Junction Road, to allow local residents to see the plans and give their views.

Councillor Mike Smith, Stockton Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Housing, said: “With the rising population of the borough evidence demonstrates that there is a need for this type of facility.

“We are, as ever, very keen to hear the views of local residents before moving forward."

Letters are also being sent to residents in the area to invite them to comment on the proposal.

An outline planning application will then be drawn up.
