SEVEN of the region's hospices were given a total of £16,000 as a Christmas present from the Freemasons this week.
Sums ranging from £1,000 to £2,600 were handed out at an event at the Butterwick Hospice in Stockton.
Those to benefit included the Butterwick, in Stockton and Bishop Auckland, the Hartlepool and District, St Claire's in Jarrow, St Cuthbert's in Durham, St Teresa's in Darlington, Willowburn in Lanchester and St Benedict's in Sunderland.
The Freemasons' lodge provincial grand master Eric Heaviside presented the grant, which is made to hospices in the area by the organisation's grand charity annually.
