PEOPLE in North Yorkshire are being urged to get tested for HIV during a national awareness week.

HIV Testing Week runs until November 28 and opportunities for testing are available across North Yorkshire.

The majority of YorSexualHealth clinics – with the exception of clinics at Leyburn and Thirsk will be offering quick point-of-care tests which give results within 30 minutes.

The clinics’ community outreach team will also be offering testing throughout the county.

HIV home tests are available and can be ordered online at www.test.hiv, which are free for high risk groups throughout November and December.

Dr Ian Fairley, clinical director for Sexual Health Services at York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said: “HIV is a treatable condition and no longer a terminal illness. Knowing whether or not you’re HIV positive is essential so that you can access specialist HIV services and HIV treatment.”

HIV Testing Week will culminate in World Aids Day on Tuesday, December 1, when York Hospital will be lit up in red lights and displaying the North Yorkshire Aids Memorial Quilt in the main entrance.
