REDUNDANT steelworkers are being helped find new employment after SSI Task Force members organised a jobs fair on Wednesday.

More than 30 different employers are expected to take part to showcase more than 700 available job vacancies. The Jobs fair is being held at the Redcar Heart from 10am to 4pm.

Sue Soroczan, district manager of Durham and Tees Valley Jobcentre Plus said: “We’ve had a fantastic response from companies in the area and beyond who want to take part in the Jobs fair. They recognise that the SSI workforce have excellent skills that would be transferable to a range of jobs currently available.”

Employers attending include Hitachi Rail, Group 4 Security, North East Ambulance Service, (MTrec – recruiting on behalf of Husqvarna Group), Central (supply chain for Nissan), National Tube Stockholders and Celsa Steel. Vacancies range from heavy industry to administration and logistics.

Chairwoman of the SSI Task Force and Chief Executive of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council Amanda Skelton said: “Finding another job is the top priority for the staff facing and experiencing redundancy. We are encouraging the SSI workforce, contractors and staff employed by companies in the SSI supply chain to attend the event and network with potential employers.”
