A WORLDWIDE association dedicated to the support of military music has formed a branch in the region.

The North-East division of the International Military Music Society (IMMS) will be based in Darlington.

The society will promote the region's military bands, including the Heavy Cavalry and Cambrai Band, based at Catterick Garrison, the Royal Signals (Northern) Band, from Darlington, and the Band of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, from Newcastle.

Ivor Shirley, IMMS regional organiser, said: "Many of the committee are from Darlington and the surrounding area."

Initial plans for the branch include an event based around the visit to Darlington by the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas on October 12.

Musical director of the Heavy Cavalry and Cambrai Band Captain Jason Griffiths said: "The IMMS bring us exposure. It's people like this that keep us in a job."
