HORSE racing fans will be able to show their support for the Save Our Steel campaign when Redcar Racecourse opens its gates to anyone wearing an official 'SOS' t-shirt.

The offer has been made as thousands of workers face the prospect of redundancy as the town's SSI steelworks was mothballed at the beginning of the week following a worldwide slump on prices.

As well as the chance of free entry people will be able to place a bet on the 'Save Our Steel' race on Saturday when the town's MP, Anna Turley, will be on hand to present the prize.

A racecourse spokeswoman said: "Free course enclosure Admission to anyone wearing an official Save Our Steel t-shirt. It’s that simple. Turn up in an official Save Our Steel t-shirt and you’ll be granted free admission into the course enclosure on our most high profile raceday of the season."

On the day there is lots of free entertainment for families and you can also bring a picnic with a limited amount of alcohol into the Course Enclosure. Free admission for accompanied children aged 17 and under.

The racecourse is also running a “Save Our Steel” horse race during the afternoon and Anna Turley, Labour MP for Redcar, will be presenting the trophy to the winners of the race.

The offer is only for the Course Enclosure on Saturday, October 3.
