GREEN-FINGERED residents in Darlington have been recognised for their efforts at an annual awards ceremony.

The annual Darlington in Bloom competition celebrated residents, community groups and businesses across the borough who have transformed their gardens, regardless of their size or location.

Five of the six categories were decided by a panel of judges, with the final category – the people’s choice award – decided by a public vote.

Each of the winners was presented with a £25 gardening voucher by the mayor of Darlington, Councillor Tom Nutt at a special ceremony at the town hall.

Cllr Nick Wallis, cabinet member for environment, leisure and transport, who also attended the ceremony, said: “There are many keen gardeners in the town, whose efforts help make Darlington a more colourful and pleasant place to live, work and visit and there were some wonderful entries this year.

“I know the judges faced a difficult task when choosing the winners and I’m delighted to be here to help recognise the efforts of our worthy winners.”

The winners were: Best garden: Anthony Geraghty, Coniscliffe Road, Darlington. Best yard: Jasmin Schilbach, Woodlands Terrace, Darlington. Best business: Newbus Grange Caravan Park, Hurworth. Best community garden: William Maychell, Cocks Memorial Homes, Middleton St George. Best alternative garden: Kelvin Vincent at Education Village, Salters Lane, Darlington. People’s Choice: Ken Graham, Forfar Close, Darlington.
