THE people of Darlington are being encouraged to play a part in abolishing torture and freeing political prisoners.

Human rights organisation Amnesty International will launch a Darlington group next week – the only one active in County Durham.

Regional representative Ron Heath said members of the group will have the opportunity to make a real difference in tackling injustices across the world.

He said: “There’s overwhelming evidence that people around the world coming together can bring about great change.

“Amnesty recognises this and has had some great results from its Stop Torture campaign and in fighting for some political prisoners to be released.

“People are now living normal lives again after being horribly tortured.

“We encourage people to write to those still imprisoned and let them know we’re thinking of them - thousands of postcards and letters have already been sent from people across the North-East.

“It’s very much a matter of individuals standing up for human rights and saying to people, we know what you’re doing, we know you’re torturing people and it must stop, it’s wrong.

“It’s about changing hearts and minds and it’s about education and making others aware of human rights abuses in the world and aware of being able to bring about change.”

He added: “Please come and join us to fight against human rights abuses and to have some fun along the way.

“There are so many opportunities to get involved, whether it’s through manning a stall to raise awareness or just writing a letter.

“Darlington is a Quaker town and though we’re non-religious and non-political, we do embody some of the same peacekeeping principles.

“In that sense, there’s a link between the Quaker history of the town and the work that we do.”

The organisation is now appealing for people across Darlington to join them in their fight to stop human rights abuses across the world and to show support for people at risk.

The inaugural meeting of Amnesty International Darlington will take place on Monday, July 27 at the Friends Meeting House on Skinnergate.

The meeting will offer those attending chance to learn more about the organisation and the opportunities available to supporters.
