My Rhodesian Ridgeback bitch has developed a nettle-like rash that has spread from her back end up towards her head, she is constantly scratching and off her food. She is also in season, whether there is a connection? What do you think it could be?

Dear Claire,
Your dog will have developed an urticarial reaction which is a little like a nettle rash in people but will cause small bumps to come up all over the skin and is caused by the release of histamine in the skin. sometimes the ear and head will swell as well. I would advise that you take the dog to the vets when this occurs and get a prescioption of antihistamines to use for a few days and then try to keep some on hand to use again as soon as the problem starts to recur. Steroids can also be used for the same thing.
