MEMBERS of the public can join a city’s Mayor for a commemoration of the bi-centenary of the Battle of Waterloo, on Thursday (June 18).

A service takes place at the cenotaph, on Burdon Road, Sunderland, at 11am, to remember all those who fought and died in the historic battle which saw the Duke of Wellington-led British forces, and its allies defeat Napoleon’s French army.

Sunderland’s Mayor and Mayoress, Barry Curran and his wife, Carol, will be joined by civic guests, including veterans and military personnel for the short service, which will be followed by refreshments in the nearby Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens.

Councillor Curran said: “I am honoured to be representing the people of our city at such an important event, joining my guests to pay tribute to all those who fought at such a momentous battle in European history.

“It is important that we all remember the sacrifices made by servicemen and women and their families from this community and others like it over hundreds of years, which has made this country what it is today.

“I hope the people of Sunderland will join me, and play their part in the national commemorations this year for the Bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo.”

Further information for anyone wishing to attend is available from the Mayor’s office, at the civic centre, by email to mayor@sunderland.gov.uk, or by ringing 0191-561 1330.
