A MAN has had his ear severed after he confronted a gang of youths who were smashing bottles in a County Durham park.
The 30-year-old suffered the horrific injury after being attacked as he reprimanded youths in Dalton-le-Dale Park, near Seaham, on Saturday evening.
Nine local teenagers, aged between 14 and 19, were arrested on suspicion of wounding and released on bail pending further enquires.
After the vicious attack, the victim managed to use his mobile to raise the alarm and was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital for treatment.
Detective Sergeant Graeme Chisholm said: "This was a nasty assault during which a large part of the victim's ear was severed.
"Although he has been released from hospital he faces having to return for further treatment including reconstructive plastic surgery."
Police say that up to 40 youths were in the park when the assault occurred.
